A paragraph on the structure and function of the Glycocalyx

Basically the Glycocalyx may be viewed as a layer that may consist of slime but may also contain sugars and proteins. On bacteria the glycocalyx is a way for bacteria to avoid detection by the host's immune system. If it is made out of slime the glycocalyx can be used to adhere to surfaces.
